Fairlight CMI Legacy MKII+
Fairlight CMI Legacy MKII+ sets a new standard on the refill market. Technically speaking, it is a Reason 4 and 5 compatible refill, loaded with no less than 2 304 instrument patches; 1 014 NNXT patches, 622 Combinator patches, over 190 ReDrum drum kits and much, much more.

Virtual machines
All instruments are divided into virtual “machines”. This is a concept inspired by Elektron’s Machinedrum & Monomachine grooveboxes. The Combinator graphics unique for each machine / instrument. All of the patches in the refill are named accordingly, to make it easier to find the right sound when producing music. We thought it was cooler to create a specific bass machine instead of simply adding a bass category.

Background
Fairlight CMI was introduced in 1979 and it was the first ever keyboard instrument with digital sampling, ie recording of sounds and storing those in a computer-like fashion. The Fairlight systems of those days cost about $350,000. The extremely high price combined with the fact that only highly successfull acts got to use it (like Peter Gabriel, Kate Bush, Keith Emerson, Howard Jones and many others) helped form a myth around the instrument. When we got the chance to use some original recordings directly from a Fairlight IIx, we were instantly turned on by the idea of building a refill, since these sounds still are so genuine, classic and highly looked after. We contacted the father of the Fairlight – Peter Vogel – in Australia and got a thumbs up about the project. This has helped us build and maintain what today is the world’s largest collection of Fairlight sounds. This is all available for Reason 4 and upwards.

Yeah right, 80s sounds!
Be warned if you think this is only a library of old, vintage sounds. It surely isn’t. With over 2,300 patches (and over 100 more in the included bonus refill) to choose from, rest assured you will also find the freshest, coolest new sounds you have ever heard from Reason. It’s a refill where nostalgia meets utter futurism.

When will they release the CMI III sounds from 1986 … ???
a big jump of sonic quality – from II to III …
    just curious …

    1. bitley says:

Hi there Rollo! Not THE Rollo, I presume? :) “Vrede” in Swedish means “Anger” by the way! ;)

Fairlight Series III samples are said to be “not okay” to use by Fairlight in Australia, who wishes to keep the licenses and possibilities to use those sounds for their own product (the upcoming new $17,000 + freight and tax CMI).

However, there’s LOTS of sounds in this refill which easily sounds equally cool or even better than the series III fairlight, so it’s not only “lo fi” sounds in this library. I have tried to keep the Fairlight feel but also added more hi fi sounds in order for users to be able to create their own “art of noise” or “pet shop boys” tracks. Also, you can always spice the refill up with the sounds from Reason’s own Orkester sound bank and so on to blend in more of hifi on top of the grittiness of the Series II. All in all, I think with Reason 5 and this refill, you basically have almost everything needed to perfectly emulate using a Fairlight and a multi track studio with high class effects units. Remember, the Fairlight (II) never sounded very good, it’s what people did with it that counts. And it’s that sound that I’ve been fighting for with building the refill. The refill is like having a series II, a series III as well as a built in Bruce Swedien to make it all come out right :-) Although you’ll have to mix it yourself. But wear your “Bruce” hat and I think you’re on the way. :) Best / Patrick! ;)

      1. Aaron B says:

Hey Bitley me and my girlfriend just ordered The Fairlight CMI Refill How Long Before We Get It ?

        1. bitley says:

Thanks a lot for this Aaron! The links are sent out as soon as possible, maximum waiting time is 12 hours.

  3. Ronald says:

    hej !
Great Refill ! Just curious : I just ordered, how long will it usually take to get a download link ?

    tack, Ronald

    1. bitley says:

Hi there Ronald! Not long at all, I just invited you now. I think I’ve stated on the site somewhere that users should “please allow for up to 12 hours” before receiving the link since it’s a manual operation from my side, but in practice, it usually takes “minutes” to get it. :-) Let me know what you think once you’ve started using it. Kind regards, Patrick.

      1. Ronald says:

        hej Patrick,

thanks, I did get the invitation now. Unfortunately the download stops everytime after 200 to 400 megabytes… Have tried a few times now to no avail. Have you ever experienced this ?

        thanks a lot, Ronald

        1. bitley says:

Hi again! :) Not really no, but I run the DropBox application, I think that’s the key. Once you’ve got it installed and you’re logged in, the refill will download automatically to your local dropbox folder. You’ll see the dropbox icon turn into a green “V”-sign (for OK) when it’s done (a blue recycle symbol says downloading or uploading is in progress). When it’s green and OK’ed, just copy the refill from the dropbox to your local working directory and you’re set.

          Best,
          Patrick!

          1. Ronald says:

aha…. yes, I see it now. I don’t know anything about this dropbox application so i tried to download it from your shared folder. But it’s there now.

            thanks a lot,
            Ronald

  4. bitley says:

Excellent Ronald – yeah, it can be a little confusing at first but it’s quite easy to work with once you get the hang of it. DropBox is really cool! :)

Here’s some recent user comments posted on Propellerhead’s User Forum.

    Supersonic user comments

“You know, for the life of me, I can’t understand why the Props have not BEGGED you to add this to their signature/official series refills. I think your refill is head and shoulders above the new Props Drum Takes series. As I posted in a previous thread, Big Fish Audio put out almost identical material many years ago! I know I’m comparing apples with pears here but I’m talking from a usefulness and uniqueness perspective. It’s quite clear from all the wonderful comments above what a monumental success your refill could be with the right backing and promotion. I just can’t understand it. Help!”

“Just plooped down the money for my this refill, my very first, I might add…well other then my props refills. Must say, I’m not dissapointed…some awesome stuff here Patrick!!!!!!”

“It’s very difficult to browse and audition these patches all the way through without getting a sudden burst of inspiration and clicking the record button. I’ve been waiting for a good refill with no cheesy sounds and this is it! Excellent work on this.”

“Wow this refill IS awesome!!! Its huge…..Long days ahead *deep breath*
    Thx Bitley!!!”

“BUY THE REFILL FOLKS! Seriously, you will be very glad you did, it’s effin awesome!”

“Get this at a great price while you can. I was a bit stroppy a while back as I paid almost full price after being an existing customer, then again I lucked out on the free Reason 5 offer, that’s life. After listening to this refill it brought back memories and sparked inspiration. It is worth the full asking price and more so if you lived through the 80s or are just living through the revival then don’t miss out!”

“I have been studying for mid terms so i haven’t had much time to use it, but in the time i have its quite the refill, and i think its going to be one of those refills to have in the must have refill list. I have banged about with it just noodleing about and the sounds sit well in the mix and with a few tweaks you can get the drums that come with the refill to frighten your cat or (insert pet here). My iguana had no comment though.”

“I can only think of one word to describe this refill pat (Outstanding).

Another word comes to mind as well (craftsmanship).

I never thought a refill coud sound this good.

    thanks .

    mart”

“I’ve gone through at least 75% of the patches and I haven’t found a pretty patch yet!!!! I have enough of those sounds anyways. The sounds in this refill ooze character and grit. A little rough around the edges, but in a very good and tasty way. I’m loving these sounds.”

“Dude, with a refill like this, you should contact Propellerhead to push it for you. This thing is even better than Soul School and that was being sold for 99 euros, which I think is pretty steep! Especially if you see the content that you made. I’m not complaining though. I have to say I haven’t done much with it cos I don’t have the time right now cos I’m going on vacation but man those samples are something else.

If you have Propellerhead pushing this for you, and you have some GOOD DEMOS, you can easily get 150 for it and it will probably sell well. You also need exposure in magazines and shit because that’s apparently where most “musicians” still get their info.”

“Holy Shit! I’m into the J’s right now and this thing is fuckin amazing!!!

Everybody out there needs a copy of this refill!

It’s like one big phat analogue orgas…crap, now I gotta clean my keyboard.

Bitley, my hat’s off to you sir, this is a fine piece of craftsmanship! Hell, I’d stick my name on it just because it matches! :P

Hopefully the contributions I’ll be making will be a welcome addition for everybody!”

“You’re right. You have no idea about this refill until you get it. It’s fucking massive.”

“Wow! I got it late last night, so I have only gone through a small fraction of the many sounds, but I already love this refill! The sounds of the Fairlight sure got character and personality! Very inspiring and fun to play with. This will complement my Reason sound library in a great way. It’s not just about nostalgia, this early sampling stuff is very creativly done and brings a special flavour you can’t find anywhere else. I know exactly what ReasonGroove means when he says that he got enought of the “pretty” sounds already – these sounds are pretty in their own way. And very inspiring. It’s remarkable to have the full Fairlight library in a single refill. I think Patrick (Bitley) has done a great job. The full price was a little too high for me, but at this price it was a no-brainer, absolutely. I’d say get it before the deal runs out! Thanks Patrick!”

  6. Claes Wegener says:

How do I receive my purchase. When you click buy button, I pay the money but there is no info about how to receive the purchase. What to do?!?!?

    1. bitley says:

      Thanks Claes!

There’s in fact quite a lot of info about how to receive the purchase. No worries. What to do? Click on your dropbox referral button in the mail you have recieved now & install dropbox and wait for the refill to be synchronized (downloaded) to your computer. Then, copy the refill from the dropbox to your local working directory and start playing! :-)

      Thanks!
      Patrick :)

    Hi,

I purchased the (amazing) original Legacy refill when it was released. Then upgraded to Supremacy. Been away from music making for a while (all work and no fun makes…) and I would like to know what I need to be eligible for the 25$ Supersonic upgrade offer. I have the email receipt but I cant remember registering the product.

    Thanks / Per

    1. bitley says:

No worries! The e-mail receipt works just fine! :-)

Kudos & welcome to the future!

      Hi there!

If you want ‘both’, get Supersonic – it contains all of all of my refills. Everything in one neatly packed 2 gb (of raw data) refill.

  9. James says:

    Hello Patrick,
I am very excited for what you have done here with the Fairlight library. Just taking a moment to get my head around which direction to go and becoming a Reason newbie (no midi out though) or going the the Kontakt route (but my mac is a older G5 quad machine) and I think I would miss your combinator patches. Are you available via email to ask some advice about this? Or please email me back.

Also, I’m sure you are aware of Peter Vogel’s development of the Fairlight page R/D ipad app. Any thoughts on integrating your great II library to this in some way ? I think it would be a great combination/interface, etc.

    Look forward to your reply,
    Happy New Year, James

    1. bitley says:

Hi James! Reason integrates nicely into other daw’s via ReWire and is good to go with the refill. Kontakt is being developed for. Their iApp sure sounds cool… have you seen NanoStudio btw? :-) Reach me at patrick.fridh at gmail.com. :-)

      Happy new year!

      1. michel Ayello says:

        Hi Patrick,
Thank you for your fast answer.
I have listen to your excellent tracks.
But i’d like to listen to some orchestral sounds , some keyboards sounds, some Mean machine sounds, some pads ect.
i’m very amazed by the concept of your product and the demos sounds right but i don’t do this kind of music, it’s the reason why i need to hear more sounds before buying your refill.
        Best regards
        Michel, from Marseilles, France.

  11. bitley says:

    Thanks Michel,

The sounds are unique and really good; you have material here that you can not find anywhere else. Like a mixture of old Fairlight / Emulator types of sounds and newer sounds. Also a lot of analogue pads. With 2, 304 patches to choose from I am absolutely sure you could find good use for many sounds. :-)

There will, however, be more demos. You can also check my SoundCloud page (http://soundcloud.com/bitleytm) to hear what I do.

    Best,
    Patrick

    1. michel ayello says:

      Hi Patrick,
Is it possible for you to send me 2 or 3 sounds of your Fairlight refill so i can judge the stuff in situation.i’m very interrested in your refill but the price (justified) requires to be sure of the quality of the sounds and via internet is not easy to have a real precise hearing of it.
You can go to my Website and listen to some tracks :-)
      Best regards
      Michel

      1. bitley says:

Purchase the DeLight refill and test that, it’s $10. If you like it enough to want the full version, do an e-mail payment directly to me and deduct $10 from the Fairlight CMI Legacy MKII+ refill price.

  12. Peter Gleeson says:

Can I purchase the Fairlight refill from anyone in the States or Canada ?

    1. bitley says:

Hello, Peter. All products here are sold only from this site, so if anyone else should offer them, please let me know immediately. This is a thing starting out and distribution of physical products may be a solution later on. Right now, the low price / high performance ratio is something made possible through internet sales and downloadable files.

      Kind regards,
      Patrick

    Hi Parick,
I use the Fairlight CMI Legacy MkII Refill since 2 days without interuption.
Let me tell you it’s awesome !
I own a lot of Refills BUT i can count on the finger of one hand, the ones that really sounds powerfull, inspiring and very complete.
Your Refill is my n° 1 weapon now.
I have send to some friends a little tracks i’ve done with it , and they ask me what Native instrument i’ve use to do it, they could’nt believe that it was done with a Refill in Reason.
I have to thank you too , for the time you have took, to answer to my several mails, for your kind assistance.
You’ve done a great job, thank you again.
    Best regards

Huge props Bitley! I am a huge fan of Scritti (as you) and been on the lookout for a killer refill package with vintage synths. This looks phenomenal! I see you have the Dx-7 listed as a sound source – any chance of their EPs available in this package? Thanks – you rock!

    1. bitley says:

Hello there and thanks a lot for the heads up!

Quite a bit of EPs thrown in for good measure yes, I can think of a couple of patches that matches. :-)

      Best,
      Patrick

  15. Arthur Stone says:

Hi Patrick – looking forward to being Bitley-enabled…first project is a remix of Scanner for the Gary Numan/Soundcloud mix-off. I’m sure the Bitley Fairlight will add something special to the track. Thanks for your hard work – much appreciated.
    Best, Arthur.

    1. bitley says:

Awesome, let me know the results. :-) Greetings and thanks.

  16. Torley says:

Bitley, your demos are delish! I enjoyed the cheeky nod to Art of Noise’s “Moments in Love” in one. Oh, sigh, I don’t use Reason anymore — I’m an Ableton chap — but if this ever came over to the Live side, I’d surely indulge in it!

    1. bitley says:

Thanks! :-) I wish I could satisfy all needs of compability, but it’s impossible to do that of course. Glad you like the demos though. Also, Reason can always be used as a sound module to any other app supporting ReWire. Ableton does. :-)

      Best,
      Patrick

  17. Arthur Stone says:

Hey, I’m up and running now – good selection of sounds/presets, great audio quality and I like the folder system too. Real easy to enjoy the sounds and create.
Thanks Patrick, really first-class work! Love the 909′s.

    Best, Arthur.

    1. bitley says:

      Thanks a lot,

I am sure you will have many hours of true creative flow using the refill. Thanks again for ordering! Post links to tracks you’re making with the songs in the soundcloud group, it’s most welcome.

      All the best
      Patrick

  18. Arthur Stone says:

It’s like Christmas day…I’m sure I’m just scratching the surface at the moment…lots more to come. The drum machines are fantastic. My bandmate visited and we just spent about 4 hours jamming using only the Bitley Refill – at one point he looked at me with glazed eyes and a look of awe…he said: “It’s great ain’t it!”

  19. bitley says:

Wow. That’s quite some feedback! :-) Big thanks, P.

It’s very kind and i appreciate it a lot.

  22. BashCoder says:

Wow – Patrick! I’m blown away by this collection. I’ve bought lots of sound packs over the past 25 years, but this is the first time my expectations have actually been blown out of the water! My first sampler was an Emax, and I’ve logged hundreds of hours recording Fairlights back in the day. I was very excited to see that this collection was available, and that was when I thought I would only get raw samples.

You really are quite the accomplished sound designer. These combinator patches are stellar! Way beyond what I would have expected. This collection really sets a new bar for those who want to charge a premium for simply providing a directory full of WAV or REX files. Usually I can listen through a sound pack in about 15 minutes. With yours I spent 30 minutes just on the AIR patches alone! I’ve barely scratched the surface of what this set has to offer.

To those who are thinking about getting this package, just do it. You’ll never again find so many man-hours represented in a piece of work for this price.

    Best,

    BashCoder

  23. Mark says:

    Hi Bitley,

I just found this refill today. This is my first purchased refill. I have been a long time Reason user (from v1.0) but up until now pre-made refills have never WOW’ed me.

I found your refill accidentally because I was viewing youtube videos about the new Fairlight iPad app. It looks cool but I came to the conclusion that your refill will probably be more useful to me than the iPad app.

Thanks for the refill. I cant wait to get the email link to download it.

    1. bitley says:

      Dear Mark,

Thanks a lot for this. It’s very interesting also to know ‘how’ people find their ways to the refills so it was great hearing you found the YouTube clips. I have the iPhone app of the Fairlight myself and yes, I wasn’t impressed at all, they made it look and feel more like a ‘nerd’ or ‘toy’ app than a music app, really (like the fantastic NanoStudio for instance), all respect to Fairlight of course but the refill takes these sounds to a whole other platform, being able to 1) sound just like the real deal and 2) moving on from that and being able to give you brand new sounds a Fairlight II or even III couldn’t produce. Reason is underrated. :-)

      Best,
      Patrick

  24. michael says:

hi guys!can i have your help please?i am a total beginner with reason and bought the fairlight refill and i don’t knwo how to make it work with reason. i dowmloaded the files from the dropbox, so what do i have to do now?
    thanx, greeting from switzerland
    michael

    1. bitley says:

      Hi Michael,

I can not give you all details in a thread like this; it’s easier for you to read in Reason’s excellent PDF manual / built-in help feature. The basics: 1. Place the refill in a folder for instance named “Fairlight refill”. 2. Open a NNXT in Reason. When the dialog comes up (for loading sounds into the NNXT), locate your Fairlight (or what you called it) folder, open it and drag the refill icon to the left view – “Favourites”. This looks a little bit different depending on whether you’re using R4 or R5. If you need further assistance, don’t hesitate e-mailing me at patrick.fridh AT gmail.com or ask in the Propellerhead forum. It is not really complicated but it can appear confusing when you are new to it. I hope you’re up on track soon! :-)

      Best,
      Patrick – Bitley™ – Da Creator™ :)

  25. Paul says:

    Hi Patrick,

I ordered the Fairlight refill yesterday afternoon but haven’t received an invitation yet. Have you received the order correctly? Call me impatient but I just want to get started with that refill :-) .

Hope to hear from you soon,

    Paul

    1. bitley says:

Thanks Paul! You got the invitation within 1 hour of ordering, please check your email account’s spam folder. Email me at patrick.fridh AT and gmail if the problem persists. :-)

  26. Ashveen says:

You’ve turned Reason into a whole different music-making machine for me. Many many thanks for sharing your talent.

Thanks a lot for this Ashveen! Wonderful comment. :-)

      Patrick

Hi Patrick, absolutely loving the sounds I’ve heard on this ReFill, and after searching high and low for Emu Emulator samples online, this will be a godsend. I have sent you money now via pay-pal, so was wondering what the next step will be?

Also, are the emulator sounds tagged as such in this bank? I.E. are the synth sounds labelled according to their source synth?

Keep up the great work! :-)

    1. bitley says:

      Thanks a lot Richie,

I sent you an e-mail reply; in short, you’ll get your download link soon & the sounds are labelled in the same fashion as in the Fairlight CMI Legacy II+ refill which makes it very easy to find sounds.

      Best,
      Patrick

    Hi Patrick,

That’s great, thanks man! Can’t wait to get amongst these samples. Big thanks, and great work compiling these.

BTW, your demo ‘Xpander’ is so very cool, especially the second section. You should perhaps do a longer version!!!! :-)

    Best,

    Rich

Thanks a lot Rich, I may do that one day! :) I did the refills for my own work, I guess that’s how you put the most love into something.

    Hello Patrick !

I wish to Congratulate You on your upcoming birthday and express my sincere Thank You on being so generous in sharing with us “a slice of the cake”.

I have been a long time Reason user and while navigating in the Propellerheads Forums I too came across the thread on the Fairlight II+ and instantly became interested in purchasing your refills.

So yesterday October 4th I placed my order and within minutes I received a Dropbox invitation on your behalf. I did find the Fairlight XXL refill wich is 1.39GB in size and was unable to open it, but not the Fairlight II+ folder.

Could you Please guide me in the right direction in downloading these files?

Thank You again for giving a me an opportunity in finding new inspiration !!!
    Best Wishes,

    Arturo

    1. bitley says:

      Hello Arturo,

Thanks a lot for your kind words!

If you download the DropBox application for PC or Mac, it will handle the download for you and let you know when it is ready (by indicating a green OK symbol), after that, just copy the refill to your refills folder and you have it. :-)

      Best,
      Patrick

I have the Fairlight CMI Legacy refill from PowerFX. If I show you my receipt, can I get a discount on the Fairlight II+ or the Fairlight XXL refill?
    Thanks,

      Hi,
I just discovered that your PayPal link does work. You just have to select USA from the drop down lists to see the form in English.

You get over 2000 sounds in all, including all of the Fairlight’s 33 precious 8 inch factory discs. To celebrate the Fairlight feel, all new samples are labeled and arranged in virtual 8 inch disks as well. [...]
