Originally introduced July 1st, the ReFill has now (as of July 25, 2011) been updated to a free Rev. 2 for all users. The new update contains brand new signature patches, better organization of the files, more Kong drum patches and even more. It’s now ready for the big, major release.

So what is the Fairlight XXL? It is a refill for Reason 5 or Reason 5 & Record 1.5 and upwards. It contains the entire Fairlight CMI library, used with kind permission from Fairlight Instruments in Australia. Being the 8th major release of the Fairlight refills since April 2010 when the first version came, it now contains 3 Gb of data (this is compressed when packing the refill; the refill itself is close to 2 Gb’s), over 13,000 individual files in all; more instruments has been added all the time.

Instruments:

Fairlight CMI IIx, D-50, JX8P, JX10, Prophet 5 Rev 2, Jupiter 4, Moog Minimoog, Moog Prodigy, SH101, MS20, EII, EIII, Prophet VS, DX7, TX81Z, TX816, 01/W FD, Juno 106, PPG Wave 2.2, Matrix 12, SQ80, VZ-1, V-Synth, S-750, EMT-1, MU-80, Subtractor (!), SX-250, Sequential 440 and more.

Drums & loops:

Although this isn’t really a “loop” library as such, some interesting rex files are actually included, such as some ‘vibes’ from a heavily modified TR-606. You will also find individual drum ‘hits’ from CMI IIx, TR-505, 606, 626, 707, 808, 909, Sequential 440, EIII, LinnDrum, Sequential Tom, DMX, DR-220E, CR-68, CR-78, RX5, MRS-8, DDD 1 E-drums, M1, SX-250, RZ1, CZ230S and more.

For a breakdown on how it’s all organized in the refill, please check the Fairlight CMI Legacy II+ page to get a description on the combinator design and structure. Since II+ new combinators include the Xerxexel combis, the Intro combis and brand new signature patches (TE1), as well as many new combis in the categories / virtual instruments introduced in II+.

For previous users of the older refills

The Fairlight XXL refill contains everything from II+ and more, so you can safely move on to the new refill. The only thing that was removed was a couple of multisampled Roland JX10 “Obese Fifth” samples; the XXL refill hit the roof with Propellerhead’s ReFill packer, so some steps were necessary in order to fit it in the (current) 2 Gb size limit of refills. These samples were actually duplicates so the patch is still available in the refill. In practice: no leftouts! :) Other changes are: There’s no longer an “All Combinators” folder, instead, all of those are in the new “All instruments” and “All drums & effects” folders, respectively. Just browse those from the combinator and everything is as normal. Older tracks made with the older Fairlight refills also works, just locate all samples by going to the NNXT subfolder “Samples”, select that and Reason will find the samples. Re-save the track after that and you’re good to go.

Quick info

• All sounds from II+ – demos and info here

Great News!!!!! Any video /audio advance ?

Its excellent and 100% recomended .

    Cheers from Spain.

Thanks! Everything like that will follow! :-) Thanks for kind words!

      / Patrick / Bitley™

  2. Alex says:

    Sorry for the silly question:
There are 3000 patches, but, how many are “new” patches? Thanks from an
satisfied customer of the Fairlight CMI legacy II+

    1. bitley says:

Thanks a lot Alex! Since the Legacy II+ has about 2,400 that’d be 600. I’d say the real weight & fun thing with this new refill is the new samples. But Legacy II+ still rocks too! Upgrade when you are curious about more sounds. ;)

      Best,
      Patrick

  3. michel Ayello says:

    Hi Patrick

If i buy the update, will i receive only the new sounds or the whole refill again ?
Is there in the new sounds, accoustic instruments sounds ? if yes, what kind of ?

    Best regards
    Michel

  4. bitley says:

    Hello Michel,

If you decide to buy it, you will recieve a brand new complete refill called Fairlight XXL.rfl – it can, if you want to, completely replace the Fairlight II and EIII bonus refills. Instructions for how to do is included in the XXL-BONUS PACK 1 zip file, in the PDF.

It contains new acoustic sounds too yes, notably some better strings, pizzicatos, basses. For instance. Lots of new samples and patches.

But if you still haven’t fully explored the Fairlight CMI Legacy II+ refill, you don’t need to rush it. :-)

    Best,
    Patrick

  5. Tom says:

    Hi Patrick,

this announcement is sure great for Reason users, but I am a little disppointed as owner of the still pretty-much-incomplete Kontakt library.

Maybe you could just spread a little “positive energy” for us, too? That would be really appreciated a lot, because as you know for some, there are simple technical reasons for not using Reason. And we really count on you to continue with Kontakt :-)

    Thank you!
    Tom

    1. bitley says:

      Thanks for your comment Thomas!

I am fully aware of the fact that the Kontakt library isn’t fully as polished. I will try to improve there. It all comes down to sales figures of course, and the Reason stuff has been much more popular around here. The Kontakt library will definitely be improved and updated though. Feel free to contribute with new patches if you want to.

      Best,
      Patrick

  6. Toby P says:

Is there any way to contact you about an order I have just made?

(I got CMI II, but then saw that XXL was now available. I purchased the upgrade to that, but now realise that I think I’ve overpaid – should have gone straight for XXL!)

Look forward to hearing from you!

    Best wishes,

    Toby.

    1. bitley says:

Thanks, you’re invited. Actually you have paid less or the same as the XXL price so you should be OK! :-) The Legacy II+ is in USD.

  7. Marc says:

    Hi Bitley,

Do you offer student discounts by any chance?

    Thanks!

    1. bitley says:

      Hello there,

No – the prices are low for everyone instead, we feel that’s more of fair play. The things you get in the refills are just incredible, just listen to what users say all over the world. :-)

      All the best,
      Patrick

  8. michel Ayello says:

    Hi Patrick
Is the XXL refill works fully 100 % ?
Pardon my question, but i saw you update it , and i wanna be update too :-)
Another question. there is nothing in my dropbox. A few weeks ago, your excellent refill was in , but it is no more, it’s not a problem, because i bought it and use it, but i wonder if my Dropbox still works
    Best
    Michel

  9. bitley says:

    Hi there Michel! :-)

It works 100% of course, yes, but I have been including extra material so I will be releasing a free rev. 2 tomorrow. It contains more Kong patches and it’s got a much better file structure as well as some other nice small additions. :) Like a new bank of signature patches! :)

    Best,
    Patrick

  10. Patrick says:

Hi Pat ! , I just bought the kontakt version of the samples on sunday. Can you tell me if its worth to get this or are they the same as the kontakt version ? I have reason 5 rewired with abelton live.

    1. bitley says:

      Thanks Pat! ;)

The Kontakt version has a bit of unpolished and raw character which is sorted in classical manners like by applying effects and sensible mixing. With the Reason version; especially this one, the could-be-diamonds are polished to the max. Although you also have the rawness if you look at the NNXTs alone. So, yes, I must say you would be amazed about how the sounds come alive in the refill.

  11. Larry Escaloni says:

Hello Patrick! Reason 6, with 64 bits, is coming out. Are you going to recompile the refills for it, to 64 bit? If so, I would like to know when it would be ready so I can get that upgraded version from Fairlight II. Thanks!

    1. bitley says:

Hi Larry! :-) Thanks for asking!

      - Basically, that won’t be necessary; it will be possible to use it just like normally with Reason 6.

      - If Reason 6 will be delivered with a new ReFill Packer that does some new magic to how files are stored and accessed from Reason, it will be interesting to check it out, but not even then will this particular ‘fill be re-packaged since it is made to be compatible with Reason 5 as well.

      - If some core designs of the ReFill technology are re-designed, say, like an increase of the maximum size from today’s 2 Gb limit, it might be interesting to try to come up with a ReFill made for R6 users only.

      Have a nice day,
      Patrick

  12. Lance says:

    Patrick,
I am curious about the SCI Studio 440 library sounds. Can you tell me more?
    Thanks!

    1. bitley says:

      Hi Lance!

They’re custom samples made by a friend of mine who owned a SCI 440 for many years. He allowed me to transfer and convert his entire 440 library to the refill, and it’s included. It’s sampled drum machines, orchestra hits, etc, quite neat sounds, all coloured by the converters & filters in the 440.

      Hope this helps! :-)

      Best,
      Patrick

  13. Larry Escaloni says:

    Thank you Patrick !!!
I just downloaded the XXL, and the INTRO to XXL part of the refill knocked my socks off -WOW ! Thank you for an amazing collection of sounds.

    1. Patrick says:

Thanks a lot for this Larry! :-) Feels great hearing that it’s well recieved. I had the idea of doing an intro folder just to show some standouts from the refill. Very glad you like it! :-)

      Have a nice weekend,
      Patrick

      1. Larry Escaloni says:

Just a simple observation… I noticed that some of the sounds are very loud, and some are very quiet. Reason allows me to adjust the volume without a problem. Perhaps for the next release you can go through each refill or sound, and normalize the volume to a certain level. It makes it a little easier with the adjustments in Reason. And PLEASE KEEP THOSE SAMPLES coming, particularly if you could add some loops, riffs, REX or phrases.
        THANKS AGAIN

        1. bitley says:

If you browse ‘all instruments’ this is pretty inevitable, but the levels should be fairly OK, if not, the mixer isn’t too hard to reach out for. :-) I’d love all the level to be unity gain’ed but with 3,000 patches it just isn’t humanly possible.

          1. Larry Escaloni says:

I still can’t tell which I like more: the sounds you find and generate, or the demos you compose. You are one heck of a great composer. Do you sell CD’s with your music as well?

          2. bitley says:

Very sweet of you Larry. Creativity goes up and down, I’m glad you like it so far. :)

  14. Hans Forsberg says:

I just bought the Fairlight XXL Reason refill, but I am having big trouble getting it downloaded. Do you only provide the download through Dropbox?

    Regards
    Hans

    1. Hans Forsberg says:

I re-tried the download at 6 am local Swedish time and now I got normal speed of the download and got the complete file without download failure. As with many other public download areas I should have known it useless to try when both Europe and US being awake at the same time.
Anyway, I am ok now :-)

      1. bitley says:

Excellent, good to know. Dropbox speeds are usually very rapid. Easiest way is to use the Dropbox application (available for Mac and PC) and it will synchronize (= download) automatically.

        Kudos!

    2. bitley says:

      Hello Hans,

I saw you solved it later on but to reply your question, yes, the refills are only available via DropBox.

      Best,
      Patrick

  15. Mark says:

    Hi Bitley,

    Am I eligible for this?
I purchased the Fairlight II+ in April 2011.
So do I get the XXL upgrade for free? I purchased before October 2nd.

“You just won the lottery! Currently (up until November 5th when I turn 40 years old) I am selling this refill for $40 only! Part of this campaign: If you purchased the refill before October 2th, the XXL upgrade is yours for free. Just send me an e-mail with the same address you used for ordering and I’ll invite you to XXL.”

    1. bitley says:

Hi Mark! Absolutely, up until November 5th, this is valid. Just drop me an e-mail from the same account you ordered from and you’re set. Best / Patrick.

  16. Mike Pearson says:

Bought the Fairlight XXL package a few days ago. Wonderful. Previously I wouldn’t have said I was really nuts about the CMI or the need to get samples but that was before I realised how amazingly important they were to the eighties.

I’ve been playing with these samples, which have an amazing life-like-ness full of inspiration to play and write more. Which is exactly what I always hope from a new music equipment (software/hardware) purchase.

Your refill makes me want to make more music. Thanks so much, I greatly appreciate the work you’ve put in to make this happen. Thanks.

    1. bitley says:

Thanks a lot! I hope you will make lovely music with it.

  17. Larry Williams says:

Hi I just bought the fairlight xxl but I didnt gert a link or anything to download. when willi recieve that?

    1. bitley says:

Hi Larry! All orders get download links within max ~ 12 hours. If you have a free email account like gmail, hotmail, yahoo etc, the invitation (from DropBox) might end up in the spam folder. If you haven’t gotten it, please e-mail me at patrick.fridh at gmail.

  18. Roger Groendyke says:

    Hello Patrick,

This is a HUGE thank you for the donation of the Refill to the Old Library Studio. Holly Nelson called me earlier today to tell me that she was contacting you about doing this. This is way too cool!

Our Middle and High School students in our song creation classes will eat it up as several of them are Reason users and quite good at it too. I’ll get some pics for you as soon as the new term begins after the first of the year.

Our Director, Bob Goldie, will be sending you a donation statement for your taxes as we are a non-profit (like my music business, though it’s not supposed to be).

Roger Groendyke (AKA Mister Chill’R), OLS Instructor Coordinator.

  19. bitley says:

    Hi Roger,

I thought it felt very inspiring to be able to give a little to something like this. Just remember that XXL will not work with Reason 4; Fairlight II+ will. I hope my sounds will inspire your students!

    All the best from Sweden,
    Patrick

  20. HERBERT Ludwig says:

    Thank You, Thank You….
Fantastic sounds and work flow….takes me back to Michel Jarre or Tangerin Dream
Also your arranging and sound design is absolutely beautiful.
I definitely will be buying this refill in the near future.
Im a Reason 6, Logic 9, Spectrasonics user and looking constantly for new sounds.
Im a chillout, House, lounge composer.
    Thank you again,
    Herbert

    1. bitley says:

Thanks Herbert, you are most welcome! :) The latest release for Reason 6 called Fairlight Platinum is just out on the market. It gives you over 3,300 sounds. :) Check the info page for that refill if you like. Best! / Patrick

  21. Ruben.cc says:

Ehm… I just bought the Fairlight for Reason 5 pack using PayPal… now what? Normally I get send back to the site and get instructions on how and where to download… Not very clear on how to get my purchase now…

    1. bitley says:

No worries & I saw you’d found the solution. :-)

  22. Ruben.cc says:

Never mind my previous question, just found a mail in my spambox. Apparently Laconicsounds is using the address I use at paypal, but that was a “special” one only to accept mail from paypal. It’s a weird habbit of me to make aliases for every single site that wants my e-mail address and then limit that address for only that site. Great way to avoid spam. :-)

Downloading the pack right now! It’s gonna be a night without sleeping I think… :-D

    1. bitley says:

      Thanks!

We use the address you use when ordering.

  23. Thierry Perrotey says:

    Hi again !

    It’s ok now !

Everything’s fine, I have received the mail !

    Thanks a lot,
Can’t wait to hear these beautiful and inspiring sounds !

    Have a great day :-)

    Thierry Perrotey

    1. bitley says:
