What’s this?
The Fairlight CMI Legacy Kontakt Project is an on-going collaborative development & programming project to build the ultimate Fairlight CMI library for Native Instruments’ Kontakt 4 (and above) software sampler.
Background
Going back as far as to 1979, a small company in Australia changed the world of synthesizer instruments forever by introducing a $26,000 computer-based musical instrument called the Fairlight CMI. The Fairlight was the first keyboard instrument ever to be able to digitally record and play back any sound imaginable. This process became known as sampling. The Fairlight CMI was the world’s first sampler.
The Fairlight stored its sounds on giant 8-inch floppy disks. This sound library became very famous since these unique sounds ended up on records by Peter Gabriel, Duran Duran, Art Of Noise, Pet Shop Boys, Yazoo, Paul Young, Yello and many many others. Naturally, since the instrument was so enormously expensive, it became a legendary instrument for many reasons. Today, when everything sounds ‘pristine and perfect’ the Fairlight sound is actually incredibly desirable, just like sounds from other old samplers, because it is a sound that oozes of character and it has actually become a sought-after vintage instrument. Not only that; Fairlight are actually building a new CMI workstation that will have ‘the best of the best’ of the original Fairlights. The Fairlight CMI 30A is a most stunning product. It will also be a pro level orientated instrument, with a price tag of around $30,000.
Fairlight for a reasonable price (and platform)
Our Fairlight CMI Legacy refills for Reason (version 4 and up) are probably the best 3rd party Reason refills ever made. For the first time ever, musicians of today now has access to the entire and very precious, very famous Fairlight CMI IIx library. This is an agreement made with Fairlight Instruments in Australia; Peter Vogel, inventor of the original Fairlight CMI has personally approved the Fairlight CMI Legacy library. As soon as the Reason refills were introduced, many users started asking for Kontakt versions. To do this, while maintaining the ultra high quality and attention to detail from the refills, we have begun the slow and tedious process of transferring, and often completely re-programming each single patch.
The latest version of the Fairlight XXL refill contains over 3 Gigabytes of raw samples and totally about 3,000 unique patches (programs) so this work is now on-going but not anywhere near a fully completed state.
It should be said that if you also have Reason (version 4 and upwards) and want the Fairlight sound, we recommend you to choose one of the refills. Reason has quite a few advantages over Kontakt, since it is a complete DAW (since the introduction of Record and with the upcoming Reason 6 version). It could be said that it’s more “like” the Fairlight too, since it includes a sequencer. But of course, if you have Kontakt and a DAW that you’re familiar with, Reason is of less interest to you and that’s why we do this.
When you join the Kontakt Project, the idea, or the ideal situation, is that you, as user probably very familiar with Kontakt, can and will provide patches to the project. If you want to. You don’t have to. But when you join, you are invited to the dropbox, and there are folders there made up for you being able to adding a new folder with your name, or artist name. Add your creations there, and your patches will, if they meet our standards, be included as signature patches. You can also provide Kontakt skins or graphics, or ideas.
Please note that the Kontakt project needs a full version of Kontakt to work; Kontakt Player is currently not supported. We are collaborating directly with Native Instruments to ensure the library will meet their highest standards, but frankly, it is a long term project, and the only thing that can speed it up is sales. So by joining, you are helping us to focus on this project.
Kontakt version compability
As of now (January 2012) the library works well with Kontakt 4 and to some extent Kontakt 3. However, we plan to be using Kontakt 5 to keep in line with the updates of the sampler.
Further away from the shadow of the light
To ensure the Fairlight libraries became really interesting, contemporary, desirable and useful, they also include many other instruments. This may sound a bit strange but we will come back to this. The latest revision of the Legacy library for Reason also contains instruments like FM and Subtractive synthesizers, classic drum machines and much more. The plan for the Kontakt library is that it will contain even more of this. Users may also contribute with samples from other desirable sound sources. The point is not ‘only’ to re-create the Fairlight library but also to build a library that is demandable, usable and, in short, awesome.
Why not just Fairlight?
Our goal is not only to re-create the real Fairlight sound, but to also re-create the Fairlight sound people got when tweaking it, polishing it, EQing it, effecting it, using it. Think Art Of Noise, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Pet Shop Boys, Peter Gabriel. The Fairlight was a very lofi instrument, and while this is genuine and quite something else from, say, a new workstation synthesizer, the sounds those artists had on their records were quite “on par” with the sounds of today. They used their skills and their studios to a maximum, ensuring their tracks wouldn’t sound dull or lofi. They synchronized the Fairlights back then, so the machine didn’t have a limited polyphony. Overdubbing to tape, overdubbing the overdubs. And they also used other instruments. That’s why we include them too. Because our goal is to create libraries that gives you the complete picture, or the full sound palette. Furthermore, you should not only be able to create 80′s kind of music with the libraries, you should have everything needed to create music that sounds like something from today, or tomorrow.
Practically speaking
The project takes place in shared DropBox folders, and each participating and ordering user gets an invitation to these folders. You purchase a ‘share’ of the DropBox folder and this will get you the final version of the Kontakt library as well as many sources of working material to get you started. Updates are being posted on a regular basis. We use DropBox because it is a rock solid solution. If you have DropBox installed on your PC or Mac, you get all updates automatically. It takes some effort getting used to not dragging and dropping files – but it’s only a matter of using your computer’s Copy functions instead (right click and copy, that is).

Good idea to build a Kontakt version of the Fairlight CMI IIx sound library. But what, if someone is interested in only buying the Fairlight sound libray and not in buying the additional content of the CMI Legacy MKII product? Why paying for additional content one do not need or want?

Thanks for your comment!
There will be options, of course. I already sell the wavelight series of wave packs (sample packs) which is one option for now. The Kontakt sounds will be sold in packs as well.

Hallo
I´ve at the moment problems to download the 1,2Gb file from my dropbox acount.
The downloadprocess broken up everytime between 30 to 60%.I´d use Mozilla downloadmanager, flashgot and the microsoft explorer manager.
Its dropbox the only one way to do this dowload manage??
I had never problems with large volumes…to example the stuff from reasonbanks.com.
Please help me!
Thanks TinyVince

DropBox is the only way here yes; that is, the DropBox application itself. It’s not a download manager in a common sense, rather something better and cooler, once you get the hang of it.

1. The DropBox software must be installed.
http://www.dropbox.com
Note that this is the only way to get the files. It automatically synchronizes so you get all the files.
2. Files will not be visible (nor usable) until they are fully downloaded.
Just install, log in, sit back and wait.
When the dropbox icon indicates the downloads are finished (blue box folded open graphic with a GREEN √ symbol on top) you may copy the files to your local working directory.
It is really very simple.
Best,
Patrick

So my dropbox account is warning me that it is already over the 2GB limit for free accounts, and I haven’t added any files to it (only linked to the shared Bitley folders). Will I still be able to download the Fairlight content with my free account, especially as the Kontakt patches continue to grow? Or will I need to upgrade to a paid dropbox account just to access the content?

Excellent! Mike Oldfield has done some excellent Fairlight work, such as the theme to Killing Fields, using SWANEE. There’s a rendition of the Tubular Bells sound in the Reason bank. It’s among the Kontakt sounds too but needs to be a little re-programmed to sound correct.
You are invited and since you use Gmail, check your spam folder for the two invites (Reason + Kontakt).

Dear Bitley-team,
please forgive the stupid question, but I need some help regarding the Kontakt project: Since it does not yet cover the whole Fairlight sounds, do I need to purchase the Reason Refill as well, in order to have all the sounds at hand? Or is the refill included when I purchase the Kontakt project? Thanks a lot for your help – and yes, these are indeed the most incredible Fairlight sounds I have yet heard. Absolutely amazing!

Thanks a lot for this!!!
The products are sold as separate products since most users run either Reason or Kontakt, not many seem to use both. Currently, there are absolutely more sounds in the Reason refill but the Kontakt library is expanding, and will use some of the really nice functions of Kontakt eventually. Still, even if you would buy both, that’s not even money enough to rent a properly set up Fairlight II / III / MFX with a technician for more than a few hours. And here you get 2 years of work!
Best,
Patrick

Hey Patrick,
thank you very much for your “lightspeed” answer, really appreciated. I just wanted to be sure, because the Reason version would only have be an alternative to get some sounds which might have not yet made it into the Kontakt library. Some years ago, I was betatesting Reason 1.0 and have upgaded until version 4, but it just does not satisfy my needs at all. Since I am mainly composing in my DAW, I dislike the workflow and having to load Reason as a standalone tool, route sounds forth and back. Sorry to say (and I know some will disagree with my experience), but that means the Kontakt version will just be right for me. Hope to place my order soon!
kind regards

Hello,
as a Kontakt user, this is the only version I’d be interested in.
So, just to make sure (and I apologize in advance if this has been said elswhere and simply missed it), could you summarize the following main differences as of today ?
- Kontakt versions’ size vs Reason’s ? (Mb, samples)
- number of current K4 patches in vs Reason
- features in K4 vs Reason (syntheses, modulation…)
and also, an approximate time frame to get both libs to same level of thoroughness ?
I’m indeed close to make a purchase decision, and this information could help me a lot in that !
Many thanks a in advance for your time !
bitley says:
February 27, 2011 at 23:08 (UTC 1 )
Hi Gilles,
The Kontakt version is slightly smaller since the Reason version has so many other types of possibilities. It’s hard to estimate the number of current patches since it’s all being continously developed but you basically have a LOT also with the Kontakt version. As for other differences with Reason, you could compare the programs. Both libraries are basically as “thorough”.
Best,
Patrick

Hi Twins!
The Shakuhachi patch Enigma used was actually an E-mu Emulator II. That particular sample is not included, due to an agreement yet to be signed with E-mu Systems and / or Digital Sound Factory. However, if that sound is what takes you to put an order, I can add it as a free bonus for you.

I have a couple of questions, because i am ( and lots of others on the internet )very interested buying this
A) Does the kontakt version have the complete llX library at the moment?
B) Are the Fairlight samples sampled directly from a Fairlight CMI or did you
make patches from CMI samples floating around from the internet? ( as there are so many Fairlight samples available for download)
C)Do you own a Fairlight yourself and do you own all those ancient 80′s synths which
are also available in the pack? do you have some picjs
D) Is there a list mentioning the available patches and samples in the pack?
Great job though;-)
Dennis
bitley says:
March 23, 2011 at 20:59 (UTC 1 )
Hi Dennis and thanks,
A) Yes, it does, as complete as the IIX that we sampled was. I would say this is 90-95% of all the factory sounds Fairlight made.
B) These are original recordings of which usage I have gotten a personal approval by Peter Vogel of Fairlight. They were recorded from a IIx.
C) The particular Fairlight in question was owned by a friend of mine but is now sold. It was conserving this that made the grounding ideas for the refills and Kontakt libraries. As for other synthesizers and stuff I don’t feel like showing off and I don’t like to spread pictures, because it attracts unwanted individuals. When I record synths I prefer recording my own patches, and that should tell you I have access to all the sampled gear.
D) Not for the moment. I used to make a PDF with this but time hasn’t been available to do it. Currently there’s just below 800 sounds in the Kontakt library.
Best,
Patrick

Dear Patrick,
since weeks I am torn between buying the Reason Refill and the Kontakt version. The major issue is: Logic Pro 64 does (not yet) support Rewire and since 99% of my projects are 64-bit based, I could only use the ReFill with 32-bit Logic. On the other hand, there are so many nice additions for Reason (like the EIII refill) which sound absolutely amazing. Could you please elaborate if you are planning to add these to the Kontakt library too? Sorry for bothering you with these stupid questions, but I´d really appreciate your could help here.
Best,
Thomas
bitley says:

Thanks!
If I could, I would recommend the Reason refill anyway. It’s much more ‘finished’ and great sounding right out of the box so to speak. The Kontakt version has most of the basic sounds but it’s more raw and in need of tweaks and effects to come alive. Eventually it should be on par with the refill but that requires reprogramming of just about every single patch. I will do it, but it is going to take a few months until I can say it’s ‘top notch’, something I can say about the refill today. Don’t get me wrong – if you are a seasoned Kontakt user you should be able to get some awesome sounds out of that too. It’s more raw though; more ‘Fairlightness’ in it perhaps, where the refill can compete with current workstations and stuff like Omnispere. So it’s up to you – I have customers using both who prefer Kontakt over Reason and have made some quite stunning demos; check out stuff by Christopher Day aka SgtYapYap for instance; you’ll find it on the demos page here.
Thanks,
Patrick

Dear Patrick,
thank you very much for your feedback. I have already purchase the Kontakt version in the meantime

One thing though: Is there any way to know which files are updated via Dropbox? I have already re-saved a few standard presets with different settings and saw today, that the folder is again re-synced. So… how can I get the newer files without incidentially overwriting my version? I guess only by saving mine to a different location, but if you have any other tips, that would be great. Thank you in advance!
kind regards

bitley says:

Hi Tom! Dropbox has the downside that when users make mistakes like moving files, they disappear for all users. When such files are restored, they get new dates and can be mistaken for updates. However, when real updates will be uploaded, they will be named differently. Also, if you improve patches, please share them. Especially if you create all new sounds. Zip them and upload them to a new folder with your name inside the Contributions folder. I will check it and if they are good, they get included as signature patches with your name or nick/artist name. I hope this clears the picture a little. I know the current patches are not perfect and it’s being worked on. They are perfect in Reason but the translation changes them at times. Eventually the Kontakt stuff will be top notch. Check the newly uploaded samples and create new patches using them too if you like. Always create self-contained patches please (ie; no separate samples folder). More info will follow…
Best / Patrick.

Hello Andreas!
They are building on the same samples but more and more developed into separate products, since the programs are so different. The Reason refill is the main product with most of the development. I would recommend you to check out Reason and the refill. Kontakt is cool too but not “like the fairlight” since it’s just the sampler. Reason 5 is complete with sampling and sequencing like the CMIs. Only much better. Except the waveform editing / FFT analysis…
Thanks for the interest in the soundbanks!

Thanks a lot for this!
The plan is for the Kontakt library to have the same set of sounds as the Fairlight CMI Legacy II+, so they should be added eventually, yes.
Best,
Patrick

Hi , could you give us some advise on how to organize the files, should we put all the patches in one folder ?
thank you !

Hi Patrick! Yes, for the time being that’s the way to do it. Later on it will all be made into a ‘proper’ Kontakt library.
Best,
Patrick! As well!

I receive my files for Kontakt, but when i want to put these files in Kontakt player 4 there are in demo mode???
What is the problem ? The kontakt player?
You don’t have activation key for your download.
I’m very disapointed, i pay $100 and i can’t use them!
Can you explain that?
Thanks

Hello Sylvain!
The Kontakt Project currently only works with a full version of Kontakt. It would be ideal to have it work with Kontakt Player as well, and we will investigate what’s necessary in order for the sounds to work there too. If anyone knows more info on this, it would be welcome with some hints. Since we have no possibilities in knowing where and how our products are installed after the purchase has been made, no refunds are possible. Sorry for this.
If you want to discuss this case furtherly, please contact me by e-mail. My e-mail address is given in your PayPal receipt.
All the best,
Patrick

Sylvain, as mentioned in the product description above on this page, Kontakt PLAYER does NOT work. You need the full version of Kontakt 4 or later.
Cheers
Tom

Hi, I bought the Kontakt Fairlight package around 9 months ago’ and was wondering about all these patches coming into my dropbox over the internet. Are they new patches of the Fairlight’ and or, did they correct some of the tuning issues’ that a few of them had ? Last question: Can someone who previously purchased it, update their package and how ? Thanks in advance, Mike

Hi Mike!
There are updates / patches from users that adds new things and so on. You can basically crossgrade to Reason and the XXL refill now because it’s just $40 (normally $125) up until November 6th, you’d be surprised to hear what can be done with Reason if you have it.

Mike, the update happens through dropbox, too. This means you will have to launch dropbox and “look up” which files have been changed or added (normally, these are shown with a special icon). The downside – if you may say so – is however, that there has not been much activity during the past months because programming is mainly dedicated to Reason refills.
So just log into dropbox, check the contents of the folder and either see if there are changes to the files or download it all together again, replacing your current files.
Cheers
Tom

Hello,
I have never been interested by Reason but I must admit that when I hear you Fairlight & EIII collection I’m seirously thinking to get one.
Could you advise what ‘s the best soft “perfomer” today for your Fairlights samples ?
what version is the more stable ?
my Sequencer is Logic Pro 7.2 & 8.0 on an Apple G5 bi processor.
also what ‘s yourpakage that cinclude both EIII EII & CMI ??? XXL ?
Your demos sound amazing !!
Owning a IIx CMI don’t suffice to achieve this …
Congratuations & Happy New Year !
Patrice.

Hello
I know that you say the kontakt library is a work in progress and all, but i’d just like to take this opportunity to say that it is without doubt the most incredible and inspiring sample library i have ever had the pleasure of working with. Thanks for taking the time to compile this.
I very much look forward to seeing it grow and grow.
Take it easy, best wishes,
William
